The United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently announced the creation of a new “Regulatory Intelligence Office”, tasked with integrating the country’s legislative framework with judicial rulings, executive procedures, and public services, through the use of artificial intelligence.

According to the announcement, the office will deploy AI systems to analyze government data, track the societal and economic impacts of legal and regulatory measures, and generate recommendations for legislative updates. While it is currently unclear which system will be used for the project, or the inner workings of its operations, it has been reported that it will speed up the legislative process by 70%.

The plan has sparked concerns among legal experts and human rights advocates about the risks of relying on AI-generated legislative proposals. Critics warn that algorithmically produced recommendations could lack the necessary sensitivity to social norms and contexts.
